The History Behind the Madness
The whole tar sands findings came about a long time ago, when Peter Pond canoed up north for furs, however he found oil oozing from the ground underneath on a hot summers day. Peter Pond brought his ideas back to the states and from then on they were well known. Since the tar sands are a different type of oil compared to the pumped oil throughout the world people did not know how to extract the oil from the dirt. There was a theory in 1950's that Manley Natland's thought out it was too nuke the underbelly of the Alberta tar sands. The atom bomb would go kilometres into the ground exploding and heating the tar sands with such a great temperature that the they oil would come out of the dirt and form into big lake of liquid oil which they would then pump up with a pipe. This theory was contemplated by Alberta as they did not know how to extract the oil however it did not follow through, it is a crazy idea.
Marion Hubbert had predicted that by the 1970's United States had peaked their maximum oil and now they were descending, as this happened America realized that they were in desperate need of fossil fuels. This sprung up that Alberta was a viable option for extracting the oil and they put a lot of dedication and effort into extracting this oil efficiently, the greed for oil began. In 2000 as America had basically depleted all its resources they demand for fossil fuels increased and the consumption of oil, this made the Alberta oil sands big and since then have been extracting more and more barrels of oil to supply the hungry market. The oil industries are the superpowers of the world and the high demand has meant that there will be catastrophic changes to the environment and Alberta doesn't seem to care thus bringing these great environmental issues into play.
